Chapter Eight

During intermission in regulation play, rebuilding energy was not only encouraged but a necessity. Trainers provided carts of carbs and avoided protein. Foods like granola and bananas were the staples, and Brighton disliked bananas wholeheartedly. But none of that was on the menu now during this intermission, and he was sure he’d need a lot more energy than what was required for twenty minutes of skating. Gatien promised to wear him out in half that time.

“They make this look easy on TV,” Brighton stated as he fumbled with his chopsticks, the subtle aroma of just-had-sex rolling off his skin.

“Here.” Gatien retrieved a dumpling, dipped it into the sauce, and fed it to Brighton.

“Mm. Good.” He set the container on the tray, repositioned a pillow behind his lower back, and pointed to a vegetable dish. “What’s this?”

“Szechuan green beans. I can’t believe you’ve never had Chinese.”

“I’ve had Chinese, just not this fancy or using these things.” He tossed the chopsticks on the tray, removed another dumpling with his fingers, and popped it in his mouth. “There’s a Chinese restaurant across from the campus, but it doesn’t serve anything like this.”

“I know that place, and it doesn’t count. It’s not authentic. It’s burgers and fries chopped in tiny bites and called dim sum.”

“Is there any restaurant in this town you don’t know?”

“I’m a foodie.” He patted his muscled stomach. “I like eating.”

Brighton traced along the bold black ink of a tribal tattoo extending from Gatien’s navel to his side. “What’s this?”

Gatien smiled. “You like that?”

“Yeah, I do. What’s it mean?”

“Truth. Balance. Justice. My motto. It’s all I ever ask of anyone.”

Brighton snorted. “There’s a balance between truth and justice?”

“Mostly. There certainly should be. I’m not much for politics.”

“That’s very optimistic of you.”

“You sound surprised.”

“A little. I took you more of a ‘half-empty’ type guy.”

Gatien brushed Brighton’s long hair over his shoulder. “What does it matter? As long as there’s water in the glass, no one is going to succumb to dehydration. Besides, you don’t know me well enough to make those types of assumptions.”

“We all make assumptions, Gatien. It’s only a matter of how many we make and to what degree. It’s called projections and statistics.”

“Is that what it’s being called these days?”

“What else would you call it?”

“Gossip.”

Brighton lowered his eyes a fraction. “I’ve been following your career and off-season escapades. I guess that makes me kind of a groupie.”

“Well, I did meet you at Portmanteau’s.” Gatien rolled his shoulders and smirked. “That’s where most of the lot lizards and puck bunnies hang out.”

“Did you really climb K2 twice?”

“I had no other choice. The name demanded it.”

“Does that mean you plan on climbing Annapurna II twice as well?”

“Nah, I think I’m pretty much over it. K2 wasn’t nearly as exciting the second time. There are other things to do.”

A devious smirk sprang to Brighton’s lips. “Like bungee jumping above a volcano?”

Gatien matched it with one of his own. “Maybe. But if I had a reason to not go off, I wouldn’t.”

That sounded promising.
